Shuswap Water Skiiing

Water skiing is a leisure and competitive activity which happens in rivers, lakes and sometimes on the ocean. In the Shsuwap, most people will rent a boat and go out on the lake for 1 to 2 hours at a time.  In this case, the water-skiier is pulled behind a speedboat through ski rope and they journey on the surface of the water on one or two skis. Usually, rookies learn on double skis and then after some practice, progress to a single ski.

After the skier is standing, the driver of the boat cuts back on the throttle to the cruising velocity.

Powerboats all throw a wake which is a path of churned water behind the prop. Water skiing often entails zipping back and forth across the wake. Jumping the wake and other tricks may be done by more skilled riders. Some models of water skis are made with a small gap in the back which throws up a spray of water called a “rooster tail.”  Rooster tails make water skiing very noticeable from shoreline and put on good show.

Normally, water water-skiier’s use hand alerts to be able to talk with the individuals on the vessel. A thumb up signal signifies a need for velocity whilst a thumb down is signaling the driver of the boat to slow down. To be able to communicate with the people inside the boat, the water water-skiier will normally use hand signals. A thumb down signals to the driver of the boat to decelerate while a thumb up signifies he needs to increase speed.
